A letter written in gold dust, Sterling B. F. Clark to Rachel Mitchell, September 12, 1850. Sterling had left Vermont to travel to California, seeking gold. After his arrival, missing his sweetheart, he wrote to her – with glue, or mucilage, then sprinkled the writing with gold dust – to prove he was indeed finding gold.
